Lectionary

Qudosh ‘Idto (the Sanctification of the Church) falls on the eighth Sunday before Christmas in the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. It is on this day that the church begins it lectionary with the liturgical year.  Books from both the Old and New Testament are read but the books of Revelation, Song of Solomon, and Maccabees I and II are skipped. The lectionary contains the readings for Sundays and feast days. It also contains the lectionary for each day of Lent and the Holy Week as well as the readings for raising people to different offices of the Church, blessing of the Holy Oil, and other various services which include but are not limited to baptisms and funerals.

Commonly, the lectionary contains three readings from the Old Testament, a reading from the prophets and three more readings taken from the New Testament for Sunday and feast days. The readings which are taken from the New Testament contain a reading from the Acts of the Apostles, a reading from the Pauline Epistles (Catholic Epistle), and a reading from one of the four gospels. During special feasts, such as Christmas and Easter a fourth reading is added to the lectionary of the evening service. The lectionaries are read with greater fervor during the week of the crucifixion. Throughout the Great Lent readings are done twice a day (excluding Saturdays) and readings are marked for each of the major canonical hours.
